Skylon Tower Tips: Road Trip Games for Your Family Vacation
Finally, the luggage is packed into the trunk. The cooler is full of mini sandwiches and other goodies for the ride. Did you remember to pack your toothbrush? It won’t matter now because as you quickly consider running into the house to check, the kids are hurrying out the front door and excitedly taking their seats in the family car. Everyone buckles up their seat belts and off you go on another family vacation to Niagara Falls, Canada.
The drive to Niagara Falls is relatively close but, when you have excited children in the car anxiously waiting to arrive, this road trip can go from family fun to family feud in no time. It’s always a great idea to plan family road trip games to keep the excitement going and boredom to a minimum.
The Skylon Tower has been one of the most popular Niagara Falls attractions for families and people of all ages for 50 years. So, we feel like we know families! We put together a fun list of road trip games you can try with your family on your next road trip.
Here it is:
Let’s steer the kids away from asking, “are we there yet?!” over and over. In 20 Questions, whoever goes first thinks of something like, a type of food or animal, pretty much anything you want. The first question should always be, “Animal, vegetable or mineral?” After that, the players can ask more specific questions to try and guess — go around the car in a circle taking turns asking leading questions like, “Does it walk?” or “Can you eat it?” These should be close ended questions only – such as questions that must be answered with, “yes” or “no” only. If you reach the 20th question without a winner, everyone has one last chance to figure it out before the “thing” is revealed and another person starts a fresh round.
Name That Tune
Similar to the TV game show, the winner here is the one who figures out the name of the “mystery song” first. Choose a theme for the game, such as TV theme songs, commercial tunes, or songs from new and classic artists. The songs can be played from the radio or on your iPod. If you really want to get a good variety of everything, you can find unique song clips on YouTube. The winner of each round gets to choose the next song.
In this games, have your kids look out the window at other driver’s license plates and call out letters in alphabetical order; the first one to Z wins. Next, have them look for doubles — or even better, triples! — of letters and/or numbers in the plates. The one who has the most at the end of the day/trip wins!
